INDONESIA CONFERS HONORARY HONOR ON DAVID M. WALKER, FORMER COMPTROLLER GENERALOF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAAND HEAD OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE (GAO)

 

 

The Government of Indonesia today in New York conferred the First Class Order of Service Award ("Bintang Jasa Utama Medal") on Mr. David M. Walker, an American citizen.

 

Mr. Walker is a former Comptroller Generalof the United States of Americaand head of the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO).He was honoured for his tremendous contribution to best practices and capacity building in auditingat the Supreme Audit Board (SAB) of the Republic of Indonesia, or Badan Pemeriksa Keuangan.

 

The conferment was undertaken on behalf of the government by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, Ambassador Hasan Kleib.He stressed that the conferment not only recognizes Mr. Walker’scontributions, but also reflects the strong and growing bilateral relations between the US and Indonesia.

 

As head of the GAO until March 2008, Mr. Walker contributed tremendously to the US – Indonesia bilateral relations in the areas of capacity building, particularly in national budget management and the constitutional role and performance of the Supreme Audit Board of Indonesia.

 

Mr. Walker’s contributions include initiating the meeting of several State Audit Institutions to discuss ways and means to promote transparency, accountability in public finance, and audit of disaster-related aid.Also, as a member of the Advisory Group for the SAB of Indonesia in auditing the financial aid for tsunami and aid-stricken areas in Aceh, Mr. Walker assisted Indonesia in the planning and execution of an audit of the use of relief funds provided after the tsunami. Consistently auditing the USAID financial aid for the construction of a road between Aceh and Calang was part of this endeavor.

 

The honour was also conferred on Mr. Walker in recognition of the assistance of the GAO of the United States to the SAB of Indonesia in drawing up national financial audit standards.In one of the programs, the SAB’s officials participate on secondment in one-year on the job training at the GAO.

 

Accepting his award, Mr. Walker expressed his appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia expressed his humility and how much he valued the honour. He said he was proud to have played “a small part” in Indonesia and that he is happy the country continues to improve.

 

Mr. Walker, who is currently the President and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, a position he took up in March of 2008, also chairs the United Nations Independent Audit Advisory Committee.

 

The conferment ceremony was attended by the staff of the Permanent Mission.Also present was Mr. Moermahadi Soerja Djanegara, a member of the Indonesia’s Supreme Audit Board who is in New York on official business.
