At the High-Level Conference on
the Central Emergency Response Fund
New York, 9 December 2009
Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. John Holmes,
Let me first of all join other delegations in thanking you for convening this important High Level Conference on the Central Emergency Response Fund.
As a country that sits on a natural disaster belt, the CERF is an assurance that in the case of a disaster, our own national and local emergency efforts and capacity could be enhanced with the support of the international community.
Recently in Indonesia, more than a thousand lives were claimed in a destructive earthquake that shook the province of West Sumatera.
The support of the CERF has proved to be very beneficial in assisting national efforts to the affected areas and contributed in ensuring a speedy emergency response. We are grateful and appreciative for the outpouring of international support for Indonesia.
While being fully cognizant that humanitarian assistance is not exclusively linked to natural disasters, these forms of disasters are the least predictable. From our own experience with the 2004 tsunami and other subsequent disasters, we are convinced that emergency funds should always be readily available should countries need it.
As a reflection of Indonesia’s solidarity with international efforts in the field of humanitarian assistance to the UN system, I have the honor to announce on behalf of the Government of Indonesia a pledge of US$ 150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand US dollars) for the year 2010 to the CERF, an increase of 20 percent than the previous year.
Should it be possible to increase these sums in the future, this will be done without delay.
