Statement by

H. E. Mrs. Adiyatwidi Adiwoso A.
Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative of
the Republic of Indonesia
to the United Nations

at the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East

New York, 10 December 2008

Mr. Chairman,

Let me begin by thanking the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for organizing this Pledging Conference in support of Palestinians, and for its commitment to the welfare of Palestinian refugees in the region. We would also like to express appreciation of the Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People for their tireless effort in supporting the Palestinian people.

Indonesia is a strong supporter of the Palestinian people, the peace process, and the prospects of an independent and sovereign Palestinian nation. On July 2008, Indonesia and South Africa organized the New Asia-Africa Strategic Partnership (NAASP) Ministerial Conference on Capacity Building for Palestine in Jakarta. Representatives from over 60 countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America attended the meeting. They pledged assistance in the area of technical skills and training for over 10,000 Palestinians.

Indonesia has been participating actively in similar regional and international initiatives and activities in support of the struggle of the Palestinian people to exercise their own fundamental rights. We commend UNRWA for its continued work in the service of Palestinian refugees, who now number about 4.6 million.

We believe that in view of this vast population of refugees and the various areas of concern included in the mandate of UNRWA, the international community must continue to do its best to fund the Agency’s budget requirements. We cannot permit any failures in such services as education, health, social support, microfinance or the overall living conditions in the nearly 60 refugee camps in the region. Without doubt, the work of the Agency is a key factor in the preservation of stability and security in the region.

It is in appreciation of the encouraging work of UNRWA, as well as its potential to continue to play this role, that Indonesia is pleased to participate in this ad hoc Committee of the Whole Assembly for the purpose of announcing voluntary contributions to the Agency. In this regard, Indonesia is pleased to announce a voluntary pledge of twenty thousand dollars (US).

We look forward to continuing to support the work of UNRWA, and we call on Member States in a position to do so to make generous pledges as well as meet those pledges in a timely manner.

I thank you.
