"BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

PARTNERSHIP STRATEGIES"

JAKARTA, 3-5 SEPTEMBER 2001

            In the process of preparing inputs for the regional and the global preparatory meetings of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with the Secretariat for the World Summit on Sustainable Development of the United  Nations supported by the Government of Japan and Australia, will organize a Regional Forum: "Business Opportunities and Sustainable Development Partnership Strategies", from 3 to 5 September 2001 at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia.

            The Forum represents a significant opportunity to conduct a formal discussion involving business leader, government representatives and representatives of the NGOs on a key aspect of public and private sector partnership designed to exploring new business opportunities, including delivery of programs, that are consistent with sustainable development policies.  The meeting will be held back to back with the 3rd Bureau Meeting of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) acting as Preparatory Committee of the world Summit on Sustainable Development in order to provide an opportunity for active discussion and for gaining a better appreciation and understanding on how to move the issue forward in the preparation for the Summit.

            The objectives of the Forum, among others, are:

  • to review recent national, regional and global approaches to private sector and government partnership to identify useful models and approaches and the key elements of successful partnership;
  • to identify ideas and business opportunities for application for application of new technologies to achieve environment, economic and social development;
  • to identify measures that Governments could consider to facilitate the wider practices of partnership and minimize constrains and barriers;
  • to prepare recommendations for promoting business opportunities and sustainable development and developing partnership strategies to regional forums and to the CSD preparatory meetings.
