
No: 07/HMS/VI/00PRESS RELEASE The President of the Republic of Indonesia,
H.E. Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid, visited New York, as part of his visit to
the United States, on 12 –13 June 2000, accompanied by the Minister
for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Alwi Shihab, members of the Indonesian
Cabinet and other high-ranking officials. During this visit, President Wahid participated
in various informal meetings, including, a meeting with the United Nations
Secretary-General, H.E. Kofi Annan, members of the Rating Agencies,
members of the American-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (AICC) and the
Asia Society as well as several CEO’s of American multi-national corporations.
President Wahid also met with the members of the Indonesian community
living in the United States. Furthermore, the President of Indonesia was
invited as the guest panelist, at the World Conference on Religion and
Peace (WCRP), held at the United Nations Plaza Hotel and also, addressed
a Symposium, as the key note speaker, on the item entitled “Dialogue
Among Civilizations: Toward a Culture of Peace”, at the United Nations
Headquarters, on 13 June 2000. In both these forums, President Wahid
underscored the need to promote cooperation, tolerance and understanding
among the different religions of the world for the sake of all humanity,
while addressing the important role of religion to enhance peace and
harmony in the Indonesian society. In attendance, were various Ambassadors
and Permanent Representatives of the United Nations, religious leaders
and other eminent personalities.
