Indonesia’s accession to the Cartagena and Kyoto Protocols

H.E. Rezlan Ishar Jenie, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of the Republic Indonesia, on 3 December 2004, has deposited the instruments of ratification of the Cartagena Protocol under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kyoto Protocol under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Indonesia ratified the Kyoto Protocol on 23 November 2004 and the Cartagena Protocol on 23 August 2004.

Indonesia welcomes the entry into force of the Cartagena Protocol on 11 November 2003, and the Kyoto Protocol which will become legally binding on 16 February 2005. Indonesia believes that global action which promote feasible and mutually beneficial cooperation will bring sustainable development closer to realization.

It is expected that Indonesia’s ratification of the Cartagena Protocol and Kyoto Protocol would facilitate and contribute to the strengthening of its institutional and technical capacity in order to effectively achieve a sustainable path of development, as set out in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Johannesburg Plan of Implementation. National institutions that will have the responsibility to monitor the implementation of both the Cartagena and Kyoto Protocols have been established.
