
| PRESS RELEASE NO: 421/PHM/IX/03 Indonesia sign the convention
and final protocol of In the sidelines of the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, 25 September 2003, the Foreign Minister for the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. N. Hassan N. Wirajuda had signed a Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, 1950 dan Final Protocol to the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, 1950. The signing of this Convention and its Protocol demonstrated Indonesia’s commitment to play an active role in combating the issue of transnational crime and terrorism through international cooperation. The signing of these two instruments will further add to the signing of other related treaties previously signed by Indonesia, such as UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime dan its Protocol. The problem trafficking in persons has become a major issue in the region and in dealing with this problem, Indonesia hosted the First Bali Regional Ministerial Conference on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime (BRMC I) and in February 2002 and the Second BRMC in April 2003. The issue of prostitution has not yet been regulated in the national law, however the signing of these two instruments is a step towards ratification which will enable Indonesia to harmonize its national law with related instruments prior ratification.
