Press Release

No. 120/HMS/IX/02

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. N.   Hassan Wirajuda and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia  Alexander Downer today in New York announced that the two countries will co-host a conference on combating money laundering and terrorist financing, to be held in Bali on 12 - 13 December 2002.  The conference will be opened by both Ministers and will bring together officials from countries around the Asia-Pacific Rim.

The conference will augment and contribute to existing initiatives being undertaken by the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee and organizations such as the Asia-Pacific Group on Money-Laundering.  Indonesia and Australia believe that the meeting will enable countries in our region to strengthen further their individual efforts to prevent and counter money-laundering and the financing of terrorism, particularly by identifying capacity-building needs to meet existing and new obligations.

The co-hosting of the conference highlights the continuing commitment of Australia and Indonesia to combat terrorist financing and money-laundering in the region.
