PRESS RELEASE

The 11th  Summit of the G-15

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia will host the Eleventh Summit of the Group of Fifteen/G-15, in Jakarta, on 30-31 May 2001.  Various Heads of States/Governments from at least 19 countries are expected to attend the Summit among which include Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, India, Iran, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Egypt, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.  This year’s meeting will focus on the challenge of harnessing the potential of the digital era for development.

The convening of this forum is most timely as it marks the dawn of the 21st Century to strive towards overcoming the inevitable challenge of globalization for its member countries.  Prior to the summit, an economic/trade and foreign ministerial level meeting will be held while an international exhibition on trade and information technology will commence on 27 - 31 May 2001.

Mobilizing attention on the question of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in this contemporary time has become indispensable for the international community as it brings opportunities and challenges for sustainable development in broadening the knowledge for the utilization of information and technology and thus contribute to closing the gap of the digital divide. The issue of ICT on the agenda of the G-15 is in line with one of ECOSOC’s priorities in establishing the UN Task Force.  In order to have a wider perspective on this issue at the G-15 summit a meeting of expert group (EGM) is already being planned to start on 18-19 April 2001 in Jakarta.
