PRESS RELEASE

INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT SUPPORT THE LIFTING OF THE UNITED NATIONS
SANCTIONS AGAINST LIBYA

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia welcomes the conclusion of the trial of the two nationals of the Libyan Arab Jamarhiriya at Camp Zeist, the Netherlands on 31 January 2001. With the handing down of the verdict of the two defendants, the Government of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has thus cooperated and complied with its obligations. It is therefore now incumbent upon the United Nations to lift completely the sanctions against the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya imposed through UN Security Council resolutions 731 (1992), 748 (1992), 883 (1993) and 1192 (1998).

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia reiterates its full support to the lifting of the United Nations sanctions against the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya: It is hoped that the UN Security Council will adopt a resolution lifting completely these sanctions, which have already inflicted profound suffering to the innocent people of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and should consequently not be prolonged.
