The Presidency of the ECOSOC will be handed over in an official ceremony on Monday, 29 January 2001, at 11.00 am in an Organizational Session of ECOSOC 2001 which will take place at the Economic and Social Council Chamber, United Nations Headquarters, New York. On this occasion, H.E. Dr. Makarim Wibisono, Permanent Representative of Indonesia will pass the gavel over to the incoming President, H.E. Mr. Martin Belinga-Eboutou, Permanent Representative of Cameroon in a ceremony to be attended by high-ranking officals of the United Nations. Under the stewardship of Dr. Wibisono, the Council focused on many important issues, particularly in the field of bridging the digital divide and promoting digital opportunities aimed at maximizing the utilization of information communication technology (ICT) for development. the concrete follow-up to the ECOSOC Ministerial Declaration 2000 adopted at the high-level segment meeting is the establishment of the ICT Task Force under the leadership of the Secretary General. The strengtheninh role of a renaissance of ECOSOC in promoting economic and social cooperation within the UN system will be passed on to the new President and new bureau members in the ECOSOC activities for 2001.
