The Government of the Republic of Indonesia will host “the Special ASEAN Leader’s Meeting in the Aftermath of the Earthquake and Tsunami”, in Jakarta Convention Centre - Jakarta on 6 January 2005. The meeting was initiated by the PM Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore and supported by other ASEAN countries. The meeting will focus on the challenges brought on by the disaster and longer term reconstruction, as well as discuss setting up a tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean. The meeting will be attended by leaders or special representatives from 23 countries including 10 ASEAN member countries, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, the People Republic of China, Japan, and Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, EU Presidency and EU Commission. Representatives of international organizations such as UNICEF, World Bank, World Health Organization, and Asian Development Bank are also expected to participate in the conference. The Secretary-General of the United Nations and will also present. The meeting is expected to come up with voice of solidarity, coordinating relief efforts for rehabilitation and reconstruction program of the affected areas, fund raising and mobilization, as well as the possibility of establishing a global/regional stand-by arrangement to cope with similar disaster in the future.
