The Inaugural Meeting of the Joint Commission between Indonesia and Jamaica in Kingston. (31 March – 1 April 2003).

The convening of the Inaugural Meeting of the Joint Commission between Indonesia and Jamaica in Kingston, 31 March – 1 April 2003 was the final fruition of a process that started with the signing of the Basic Agreement for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in 1994. The Indonesian Delegation was headed by Charge d’Affairs of the Indonesian Embassy to Jamaica in New York, Ambassador M. Slamet Hidayat, while the Jamaican Delegation was led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Delano Franklyn.

The meeting ended with the signing of the Joint Communique and Agreed Minutes in which both countries agreed to a wide range of proposals designed to strengthen the ties between the two countries in the fields of commerce, trade, culture and science. During the discussions on those areas, proposals were discussed and proposal were put forward which prompted further possibilities for the economic growth and development of the two countries and the advancement of the socio-economic well-being of the peoples. In the larger context, the Joint Commission will serve as a forum not only for an exchange of ideas at the bilateral level, but also offers the two countries an ideal opportunity to reiterated the mutual commitments of Indonesia and Jamaica to peace and security in the regions and internationally.

The agreements, which were concluded, included those of sport in which Indonesia has well-known expertise in badminton and as a reciprocal arrangement, Jamaica would assist in athletics training. The two countries are seeking to establish shipping links with each other in which Jamaica will be used as a distribution hub for Indonesian exports to the Caribbean and Latin America. In this regard, the two countries reiterated their commitment to the enhancement of cooperation in the area of trade, and endorsed the activation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) and the Indonesian National Agency for Export Development (NAFED). Both countries will also co-operate in information technology and communications and facilitate cultural exchanges, especially in music and dance. The establishment of inter-bank correspondent linkages between the central banks of both countries was also discussed. In this regard, the Central Bank of Indonesia is prepared to cooperate with its Jamaican counterpart on exchange of ideas on banking and monetary matters. Another field of cooperation is that of gas and energy cooperation in which Jamaica is interested in receiving technical assistance in the management of cleaner energy resources.

In an attempt to enhance knowledge of the rich culture of Indonesia in Jamaica, the Indonesian Delegation hosted a dinner and a cultural performance at the Hilton Hotel in Kingston on 31 March 2003 in which Indonesian food was served and Indonesian dances from Bali, Sumatra and Central Java, were performed. The cultural performance was well received from those in attendance which included Jamaican high officials, Jamaican business sector and members of the diplomatic corp. ***
