INFORMATION NOTES “ REGIONAL MINISTERIAL MEETING ON MDGs
IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC: THE WAY FORWARD 2015”
The High-Level Plenary Meeting in September 2005 provides a unique opportunity for the international community to assess whether countries are on track to achieve different targets and goals of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. As elaborated in the report entitled “In larger freedom: towards development, security and human rights for all”, the Secretary General emphasized the importance of advancing the causes of development, security and respect on human rights. The Secretary-General also underlined that the Millennium Development Goals form a simple but a powerful objectives that serves as a blueprint agreed by the world’s leaders and all the world’s leading development institutions. Since its adoption, the goals have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poor, including in Asia and the Pacific region. The United Nations’ General Assembly Resolution Number 59/145 2004 strongly urges all member states to take positive interest in the process of formal and informal consultations leading to the HLPM. Active engagements at the highest level of governments are also expected, with a view to reach a successful outcome of HLPM. As part of the preparation to the HLPM in September 2005, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia will host a “Regional Ministerial Meeting on MDGs in Asia and the Pacific: The Way Forward 2015” Jakarta, 3-5 August 2005. The Meeting is organized in close collaboration with UN Special Ambassador of MDGs to Asia and the Pacific, United Nations Development Program–Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific (UNDP-RBAP), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). 2. Dates and Venue of Meeting The Regional Ministerial Meeting on MDGs in Asia and the Pacific will be held on 3 – 5 August 2005 at: JAKARTA CONVENTION CENTER (JCC) Located in the business district and near the Jakarta Stock Exchange, the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) is the largest and best-equipped facility in the region. It offers versatility, modern efficiency and traditional Indonesian hospitality – all designed to serve the world’s professionals and government leaders. 3. Accommodations Reservation for accommodation should be directed to: HOTEL MULIA SENAYAN (*****) 4. Local Transportation The NOC will provide local transportation for delegates from the airport to designated hotels and a shuttle from the designated hotels to the convention center. For this purpose, please be kindly to inform the NOC regarding the arrival and departure schedule prior the arrival in Jakarta. 5. Entry Formalities Delegates are required to have a valid passport (at least for 6 months) with a valid Indonesian visa to enter Indonesia. Please kindly contact the nearest Embassies/Consulate General/Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in your respective countries of residence to obtain the entry visa. To avoid any inconveniences, please note that submission of visa applications are recommended at least 2 (two) weeks before the date of departure. Visa on Arrivals (VOA) may be obtained at the Indonesian
gateways/airports in Jakarta. In order to arrange and obtain a convenient
arrival, participants seeking Visa on Arrivals are highly requested
to sent copies of their passports and confirmed flight schedules well
in advance to the NOC. International health certificates for smallpox and cholera are not required. Evidence of valid yellow fever vaccinations are only required from travelers coming from infected areas. 7. Customs Regulations Carrying narcotic drugs, arms and ammunitions are strictly
prohibited. Offenders are subjected to strict and severe punishment.
Advance approval has to be acquired for bringing in trans receivers. The Indonesian currency is called the Rupiah (Rp). The exchange rate fluctuates and is currently around Rp. 9,700 to US $ 1.00 as of 4th of July 2005. Money or traveler’s check can be exchanged at any authorized local banks or Money Changers. Banking hours are from 8.00am to 2.00 pm Mondays to Fridays. Banks in hotels usually stay open longer hours while Money Changers are generally open every day until late evening. Cash advances on Visa and Master Card can also be made through many ATMs, which display the relevant symbols. 9. Time Jakarta time is 7 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. 10.Weather The weather in Jakarta is moderately hot with high
humidity. The temperature ranges on average around 30? C (86?F). Light clothing is advisable due to the hot and humid
climate. However, a jacket and tie are required for formal occasions
and when making official calls. Batik shirt or national dress is acceptable
for evening occasions. Very casual attire such as shorts and halter-tops
is not considered appropriate except in sports facilities and on the
beach. The NOC will not be responsible for personal accidents
and damage to the private property of participants. It is highly advisable
for participants to make their own arrangements with respect to personal
insurance. Before departure from Jakarta, delegates are expected
to make direct settlement with the hotel for all accounts, including
room charges and, where appropriate, office space, telephone installations,
local and long distance calls, laundry and valet, telex, cable and facsimile,
restaurant, bar and room service charges. Participants are also responsible
for any charges incurred with respect to rooms remaining vacant due
to late arrival or early departure, or charges in travel arrangements
of which inadequate notice has been given. Rented cars are available, however if delegates prefer
to use taxi services, it is recommended to utilize the hotel’s
taxi service. There is no restriction on the amount of foreign currency that may be brought into the Indonesian territory. Currency amounting more than Rp. 10,000,000.00 must be declared at the airport customs. 16.Telecommunications Local and international direct dial telephone and facsimile
service as well as pc/printer internet and e-mail access is located
at the 24 hour Business Center and Services. Cell phones using GSM system
(tri-band) are operational in Jakarta. Participants are highly advised to bring with them at all times, their badges/nametag issued by the NOC in the meeting area. Individual nametag is not transferable. The unauthorized use of a badge by any other person may cause the badge to be voided. A lost or misplaced badge must be reported immediately by the badge holder to the NOC. Being kept as one of the vital arrangements of the
hotel and the National Organizing Committee in convening the meeting,
the “security and safety” aspects of participants are being
managed professionally and reasonably, for the convenience of all participants
during their stay in Indonesia. The power supply in Indonesia is 220 volts AC, 50 hertz. It is customary to tip porters and hotel personnel
service. However tipping is not encouraged in most hotels and restaurants
if a 10% service charge is already included. Office and businesses are generally open from 8.30am
to 4.30pm, Monday through Friday. Shops are generally open from 10.00am
