One Day Brainstorming Session on “Disarmament
and Non-Proliferation:
Breaking the Stalemate”, New York,
11 August 2007
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN in New York
convened a brainstorming session on " Disarmament and Non-Proliferation:
Breaking the Stalemate”, on 11 August 2007 at Doral Arrowwood Conference
Resort, Weschester, New York,
The objectives of the brainstorming session were to: (a) to identify and
analyze the current challenges and opportunities in disarmament and non-proliferation;
(b) to explore and evaluate alternative approaches and perspectives with
a view to breaking the stalemate on disarmament and non-proliferation;
and (c) to seek inputs which could be considered by the Non-Aligned Movement
(NAM) in preparation for future disarmament and non-proliferation conferences
as well as the 62nd Session of the General Assembly (“Terms
of Reference of the Brainstorming Session”)
  
The brainstorming session was chaired
by H.E. Mrs. Adiyatwidi Adiwoso Asmady, Charge d'Affaires a.i of the Permanent
Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations. The session was attended by
representatives of the Permanent Missions of Member as well as representatives
of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UN-ODA), the Monterey
Institute for International Studies, and Non-Governmental Organizations.
Four speakers contributed to the session, and they were Amb. Duarte, HRSG
for Disarmament, who discussed “Challenges and Opportunities in
Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Today” ; Mr. Jean du Preez, Center
for Non-Proliferation Studies, Monterey Institute for International Studies,
who discussed “Seeking possible consensus in the Nuclear Disarmament-Nonproliferation
Debate: role of NAM ; Mr. Jonathan Granoff, Global Security Institute,
who discussed “Pursuing Practical Nuclear Disarmament”, and
Mr. S.M. Ali Robatjazi, Third Secretary, Mission of the Islamic Republic
of Iran, New York, who discussed “Guaranteeing the Inalienable Right
of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy/Assurances of Future Nuclear Energy.

“The Role of the UN in Climate Change –
Exploring the Way Forward from Now to Bali and Beyond”

Representatives from 32 Permanent
Missions of Member States to the UN in New York met at Dooral Arrowwood,
New York, 23-34 June 2007, for an informal discussion on the role of the
United Nations in Climate Change: exploring the way forward from now to
Bali and beyond (Participants).This meeting
was organized by the Permanent Mission of Indonesia with the support of
the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom to the United Nations and
the United Nations Secretary-General’s office.
  
The purpose of this meeting is
to allow participants to have in depth discussion on key issues related
to the role of the United Nations in New York in addressing the issue
of climate change. No agreed conclusion is sought to be adopted, the aim
is to further explore how the UN in New York could support the success
of the thirteenth session of the Conference of Parties (COP-13) of the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the third Meeting
of Parties (MOP-3) of the Kyoto Protocol that will be held in Bali, Indonesia
from 4-13 December 2007 (Concept note of the
Brainstorming Session). |
Brainstorming Session
on UN System-Wide Coherence among Asia Pacific Countries
2-3 June 2007
The Permanent Mission of Indonesia
organized a brainstorming meeting on UN System-Wide Coherence among
Asia Pacific Countries, at Woodloch Pines Resort, Pennsylvania, 2-3
June 2007. The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Adiyatwidi Adiwoso
A., Charge d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN
in New York, and attended by representatives of the Permanent Missions
of Asia Pacific countries to the UN in New York and representatives
from UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNIFEM, ESCAP Regional Commission (list
of participants).
  
The purpose of this meeting is
mainly to allow participants to have in depth discussions on key issues
related to the recommendations contained in the report “UN Delivering
as One” by the High-Level Panel on the UN System-wide Coherence
of the UN and to increase understanding on the Panel’s recommendations
among Asia Pacific Countries.The discussions
at Woodloch had focused on issues regarding the process of delivering
“One UN” at country level as well as identification of challenges
in pursuing “One UN” at the country, regional and headquarter
level. |
Information
on Country Led Initiative " Multi Year Program of Work of the United
Nations Forum on Forest: Charting the way Forward to 2015
Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, 13-16 February 2007
The
Government of Indonesia is organizing a Country Led Initiative in support
of the United Nations Forum on Forest. The Country Led Initiative with
the theme" Multi Year Programme of Work of the United Nations
Forum on Forests: Charting the Way Forward to 2015" will be
held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia from 13 to 16 February 2007. The initiative
is co-hosted by the Government of Germany and supported by other donor
countries and organizations.
The CLI intends to explore, elaborate and develop
broader understanding of the concept and elements of a new multi-year
program of work (MYPOW) to be considered by the Seventh Session of the
United Nations Forum on Forest (UNFF) in New York in April 2007. The
CLI will be attended by approximately 130-150 participants from governments,
regional and international organizations and major groups.

Monday, 2 May 2005, Ambassador Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat in his capacity
as Chairman of the Third NPT Preparatory Committee opened the 2005 NPT
Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty of Non Proliferation
pof Nuclear Weapons, at the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations.

In
that occasion, ambassador Sudjadnan has introduced the Final Repoert of
the Preparatory Committee adopted on 7 May 2004 and conducted the election
of the President of the Conference, namely Ambassador Sergio de Quieroz
Duarte of Brazil, who was unanimously endorsed by the Third Session of
the Preparatory Committee.

Brainstorming
for the Third Meeting of the High-level Open-ended Intergovernmental
Working Group on an Intergovernmental Strategic Plan for Technology
Support and Capacity Building in Bali, Indonesia,
2-4 December 2004.
1. The Permanent Mission
of Indonesia organized a brainstorming meeting at Doral Arrowwood, New
York, from 20 to 21 November 2004 in preparation for the Third Meeting
of the High Level Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on an Intergovernmental
Strategic Plan for Technology Support and Capacity Building in Bali,
Indonesia from 2-4 December 2004.

The meeting was presided by the Deputy Permanent Representative of the
Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN in New York and attended by
representatives of key countries of the Group 77 and a representative
from UNEP.
Background
3.
In recent years, technology support and capacity building in the environmental
field have become a key part of the pursuit for sustainable development.
Issues encompassing human, scientific, technological, organizational,
institutional and resource capabilities are core components of the mandate
of UNEP. Capacity building, in particular, has become an explicit priority
for the UN system.
4.
The World Summit on Sustainable Development, in Johannesburg, South
Africa in 2002, agreed to fully implement the outcomes of the 7th Special
Session of UNEP on the issue of International Environmental Governance.
The Eighth UNEP Governing Council in Jeju, South Korea in 2004 agreed
on the establishment of a High Level Open-ended Intergovernmental Working
Group on an Intergovernmental Strategic Plan for Technology Support
and Capacity Building.
5.
Two working group meetings were held in New York and Nairobi respectively.
The Nairobi Meeting concluded with a compilation text, which is to be
further deliberated at the Third Meeting in Bali, Indonesia. The Third
Meeting is expected to finalize the Strategic Plan for endorsement by
the UNEP Governing Council Meeting in February 2005.

The five thematic areas pertaining to the Intergovernmental Strategic
Plan on Technology Support and Capacity Building include (a) the Introduction;
(b) Need for action, objectives/principles and strategic considerations;
(c) Implementation of the strategic plan; (d) Institutional mechanism;
(e) Financing the strategic plan
Objective
of the brainstorming
7.
The objective of the brainstorming was to develop and provide recommendations
for the G-77 and China at the Bali Meeting, on the issues arising from
the Second Meeting of the High-level Open-ended Intergovernmental Working
Group on an Intergovernmental Strategic Plan for Technology Support
and Capacity Building held from 2-4 September 2004 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The areas that were discussed at the brainstorming include objectives
of the strategic plan, implementation, institutional mechanisms and
financing mechanisms.

International Year of Micro-Credit 2005
1.
The International Year of Micro-Credit 2005 was launched at the United
Nations Headquarters in New York on 18 November 2004.
2. The Secretary-General
of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, who delivered his opening address
through video, officially opened the launch. The launch also gave “Entrepreneurs
Awards” to eight micro-credit businesses, including an Indonesian
businesswoman who worked with handicapped children to develop a small
cottage industry.
3. Indonesia
is internationally recognized for its success in micro-credit and the
launch for Indonesia gave an opportunity to showcase Indonesia’s
activities related to micro-credit.
4. The Government
of Indonesia will be launching the Year of Micro-credit 2005 on 26 December
2004 and the Government of Indonesia is in the process of exploring the
possibility of a trans-continental opening ceremony that will include
a Teleconference between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta
and the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York.

| Inter-Agency
Procurement Working Group
On
26th February 2004, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia
to the United Nations, with the cooperation of the Directorate General
of Multilateral Economic, Development and Finance of the Department
of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, held a one day Seminar
in Surabaya, Indonesia to prepare for the 29th Meeting of Inter Agency
Procurement Working Group (IAPWG). The Seminar was attended by more
than 75 businesses in East Java Province, particularly from the Surabaya
area. The objective of the Seminar was to inform the Indonesian business
community of the many opportunities to do business with the United Nations
System, through
the procurement mechanism. The latest data shows that the UN system
procures goods and services amounting to approximately US$. 4.6 billion
per annum. The Seminar in Surabaya is one of three seminars that will
be held before the IAPWG in Yogyakarta between 31 May to 4 June 2004.
Similar activities will be held in Jakarta and Medan by the end of March
2004.

One
Day Brainstorming Session on UN Reform, New York, 14 February 2004
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN in New
York convened a brainstorming session on "UN Reform: Challenges
and Prospects in the Current International Situation" on 14 February
2004 at Doral Arrowwood, New York.
The objectives of the brainstorming session were to: (a) increase the
understanding of the Indonesian diplomats from the Mission and the Consulate
General of Indonesia in New York about UN reform process in all its
aspects; (b) formulate a basic paper on the overall process of UN reform;
(c) examine Indonesia's national policy and position on the issue of
UN reform and arrive at possible policy recommendations, and (d) actively
engage and contribute to the reform process.
The brainstorming session was chaired by H.E. Amb. Rezlan Ishar Jenie/Charge
d'Affaires a.i of the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations.
There were three speakers who also joined and contributed to the session.
They were: Prof. Edward C. Luck of Columbia University who discussed
“Critical Overview of the UN Reform: Ideals and Realities”;
Mr. Sarbuland Khan, the Director of UN-DESA, who discussed “The
Urgency of UN Reform within the Current Context”: Social and Economic
Perspectives” and Ambassador Gunter Pleuger, the Permanent Representative
of Germany to the United Nations who spoke on the topic, “The
Urgency of UN Reform within the Current Context: Peace and Security
Perspectives”

UN
Internship Visit the Mission
( Friday 7 March 2003)
A
delegation of 70 post-graduate and doctoral students from 35 countries
currently following an internship programme at the UN Headquarters
paid a visit to the Permanent Mission of Indonesia on Friday, 7 March
2003. They were received by the Chargé d’affaires a.i.
and Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Mochammad S. Hidayat
the diplomatic staff of the Mission in an informal evening gathering.
The reception began with an audio-visual presentation depicting the
latest political, economic and social developments in Indonesia, followed
by a briefing and a question-and- answer session.
The participants were then treated to traditional dances from across
the Indonesian archipelago, after which they savoured popular national
dishes. The evening was capped by a photo session, before which the
UN interns expressed their appreciation for a most enlightening and
enjoyable evening which they said had widened their horizons concerning
Indonesia and the progress of its development.
