Good evening to you all, As the President of the Council, Indonesia has been presiding officially this afternoon over briefing by Prof. Gambari, both in Chamber and followed by briefing in the consultation. And benefiting from presiding from that briefing as President of the Council, Indonesia has captured certain understanding from the Council deliberation. Those understanding as we understand it as Indonesia as President of Council has captured it as follows: Welcome the follow up mission of the Secretary General Special Advisor to Myammar, Mr. Ibrahim Gambari, and support to the continued effort of the Secretary General Special Advisor. That is one mood or one sense that was captured by the President of the Council. Obviously there was also the sense of reaffirmation of the expectation of the Council as said at the statement of the Council adopted last 11th of October. As the President of the Council, Indonesia also captured the understanding within the Council that welcome the recent positive development, including the release of some detainees, the contact that has been established between Minister U Aung Kyi as liason officer and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to meet the key members of the National League for Democratic Party. We have also, Indonesia as the President of the Council, has also captured the mood or the understanding of the Council that welcome the statement by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi delivered by Mr. Gambari on 8th of November including the expectation that meaningful and time bound dialogue will start as soon as possible. And in this context encourages all sides to create condition for such dialogue including by making use of role of UN to facilitate this. Also based on the deliberation that we said both within Chamber as well as at the consultation the Presidency captured the understanding and the mood of the Council that express concern about the fact that prisoners, many prisoners are still in jail, and that arrest, a few arrests have occurred and express concern as well about the fate of protesters arrested during recent demonstrations that are still unaccounted for. There is the mood that we should call on the authority to allow access for humanitarian assistance organizations to facilitate humanitarian assistance to person in need through out the country. And in this connection welcome the agreement to the visit of Special Envoy, Bennero, as well access to be given to RCRC. The deliberation in the Council, both in the Chamber and in consultation let the President to identify the sense that there was a need for the government of Myammar to create condition for dialogue and reconciliation by relaxing the detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi? and pursuing the release of political prisoners and detainees. The discussion also I think underline acknowledgement about the importance role of Asean in supporting the peaceful transition to democracy and also the good efforts of the Secretary General. And I think as you will be familiar, many Council members also referrer to the importance of the upcoming Asean Summit. I shall also like to share that based from our stand and our understanding of the discussion that took place, there a sense that we look forward of having the earliest return of Mr. Gambari to Mymmar as stating in his statement of 8th of November and there should be tangible result from this effort. And finally of course the Council is only based on the Presidential statement that it should remain considered to keep the development under close review. That was that I wish to convey at this time. As I said that this are understanding and sense that the Council President can capture from the very rich discussion that we had both in Chamber in public and also later on in consultation. That’s what I like to take this opportunity to share with you all. Thank you. Q-A: Q: Can you describe the statement (?) A: I did certain term in describing what I had presented. My description was what I had explained, namely that following a very rich and useful deliberation both in Chamber as well in consultation, the President of course has been benefiting in chairing and presiding over the Council was able to capture certain common understanding as elaborated. And those are the understanding and the mood of the Council as the President has captured. That’s what I had just now discussed. Thank you very much. Q: Did you captured the mood that the Security Council are divided on the issue? A: Council members, if there is one thing that Council Members are agreed on is the need to maintain Council unity. And here if I wish to speak as Indonesia as national capacity, we are absolutely convinced, as Indonesia, that progress in Myammar can be best achieved if the international community speak with one voice and we had last time around at the Council deliberation after following after Prof. Gambari briefing. Also today we had a very good discussion as well and that sense of unity is very much there and certainly in supporting Prof. Gambari efforts. So I think we are not any where that we were less now united than a few weeks back. If any thing renewed sense of unity within the Council wanting to support Prof. Gambari, in wanting to be useful support into him to make or to make condition conducive in the process. Q: Why don’t you have a Press Statement then? A: I had described the sense of the Council just
now and I leave to your own analyses. Thank you sir!
